About This Blog

Hi there! I’m Skydolphin-M, and I enjoy writing little blog posts

about my everyday adventures.

Summer vacation is just around the corner

—and our family has one special place we’ve been wanting to revisit for a long time!

Looking Back: Toba & Shima in February 2023

Let’s rewind to February 2023.

Back then, my daughter was just two years old, and

we took a family trip to Toba and Shima in Mie Prefecture,

riding on the double-decker Kintetsu Vista Car—a train I’d always dreamed of trying!

A Trip Full of Fun—and One Little Regret

It was a trip full of excitement and smiles, but…

I still have a little “unfinished business” left from that journey.

What This Blog Series Is About

In this post, I’ll be looking back on that memorable trip,

while sharing our plans to finally complete our

Toba & Shima adventure this summer!

To keep things easy to read,

I’ve divided our story into three parts.

Each one has its own blog post, so feel free to check out the ones that interest you most!

Part1: Riding the Kintetsu Vista Car to Toba Aquarium

Part 2: Rainy Day Fun at Shima Spain Village

Part 3: The Day We Promised to Return to Dolphin Island

Important Notes for Your Stay & Car Rental in Japan

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip, please keep the following important points in mind regarding your accommodation and car rental in Japan.

For Accommodation (Hotels, Ryokans, etc.)

When booking your stay, please be aware of these details:

  • Language Support: While many hotel booking websites offer multilingual options, the staff at individual accommodations may not always be fluent in languages other than Japanese. If language is a concern, we recommend contacting the accommodation directly to confirm their language support before booking.
  • Required Documents & Payment: Be prepared to present your passport for identification upon check-in. It’s also advisable to confirm accepted payment methods (e.g., specific international credit cards) and whether a deposit is required, as policies can vary.
  • Facility Policies:
    • Child Policy: Confirm if children are allowed, any age restrictions, or if additional charges apply for children staying in the room.
    • Amenities: Check what amenities are provided (e.g., towels, specific toiletries) and if extra items are available upon request.
    • Check-in/Check-out: Inquire about early check-in or late check-out options and any associated fees.
    • Luggage Storage: Confirm if luggage storage is available before check-in or after check-out.
    • Special Needs: If you have specific needs such as dietary restrictions (e.g., halal food), prayer rooms, or accessibility requirements (e.g., wheelchair access), please confirm directly with the accommodation in advance.
  • Cancellation Policy: Always carefully review the cancellation policy for your specific booking. Policies vary widely and can result in significant charges if not adhered to, especially given time zone differences and exchange rates.
  • Shuttle Services: If the accommodation offers shuttle services from the airport or train station, confirm its availability, schedule, cost, and if advance booking is required.

General Recommendation: For any specific concerns or questions regarding your stay, we strongly advise you to check the booking site’s detailed information or contact the accommodation directly before finalizing your reservation.

For Car Rental in Japan

Renting a car can offer great flexibility for exploring Japan, but certain requirements apply to foreign visitors:

  • Driver’s License Requirements: To rent a car in Japan, you must possess one of the following valid driver’s licenses:
    • A Japanese Driver’s License.
    • An International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, along with your original domestic driver’s license and your passport. Please ensure your IDP is valid and not expired.
    • An official Japanese translation of your domestic driver’s license, along with your original domestic driver’s license and your passport. This applies to licenses issued in specific countries (e.g., Germany, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Taiwan).
  • Language Communication: Please be aware that some car rental branches may require you to be able to communicate in Japanese for important instructions and in case of emergencies. If you are not fluent in Japanese, it is highly recommended to confirm with the specific rental branch whether English or other language support is available.
  • Required Documents: Always carry your valid driver’s license (and IDP or translation, if applicable) and your passport with you when driving and when picking up the rental car.
  • Insurance: Understand the insurance options available and choose coverage that makes you feel secure.
  • Driving Rules: Familiarize yourself with Japanese traffic laws, including driving on the left side of the road and specific road signs.

General Recommendation: Before making a car rental reservation, please check the specific requirements of the chosen car rental company and branch directly. This will ensure you have all necessary documents and meet their criteria for rental.
