How Our Trip to Toba Began

The journey began with a poster I happened to see at a Kintetsu station.

“Shima Spain Village… I wonder what it’s like?”

That one curious thought was all it took to set our plans in motion.

Once I’d made the decision, there was no stopping me!

Riding the Double-Decker Vista Car

I was super curious about what a double-decker Vista Car would be like,

so I booked our seats while wondering where the best view might be.

With bags full of toddler essentials,

we boarded the train early in the morning—

sleepy but full of excitement and that special feeling

you only get at the start of a trip.

Off to Toba, riding in style on the Vista Car!

(My daughter fell asleep right away, since it was so early.)

But I’ll be honest—

if you have a lot of luggage, the Vista Car might feel a little cramped.

I was also expecting to see the ocean, but it passed by in the blink of an eye!

So let’s just skip that part, haha.

Arrival at Toba Station & Stroller Rental

Once we arrived, our first goal was to rent a stroller.

Since the baby stroller counter didn’t open until 9 a.m.,

we hung out at the station’s food court for a bit.

(As of now, opening hours are listed as 10 a.m. on the Kintetsu Toba Station website.)

We were able to rent one of the few available strollers (reservation required)

Then we completed the paperwork for our rental car

at a nearby ORIX Rent-a-Car location,

Visiting Toba Aquarium with a Toddler

before heading on foot to our main destination: Toba Aquarium, just a short walk away!

Thanks to the local rentals (both stroller and car), everything went super smoothly.

I also bought a cute dolphin coin purse for my two-year-old daughter,

and she still treasures it today.

It was a vacation, so I was in high spirits,

and despite her young age, my daughter’s eyes sparkled

as she watched the sea lion show

We also saw a dugong munching on seagrass at the bottom of its tank—

something I’d never seen before!

It was such a refreshing and unique experience.

Local Lunch Featuring Ise Ebi

After wandering through every corner of the aquarium,

it was suddenly lunchtime.

I originally wanted to go to a restaurant called Hamanami,

but since I wasn’t sure whether strollers were allowed,

we opted for a nearby place called “Iseebi” instead.

I ordered a spiny lobster (Ise ebi),

and it arrived at the table looking amazing!

Just thinking about it now makes me smile.

I really wanted a beer,

but since I had to drive, I settled for a non-alcoholic one to quench my thirst.

It was still perfect

Wrapping Up Day 1 & Heading to the Hotel

After lunch, we went back to the aquarium

to explore the areas we hadn’t seen yet.

We stayed until closing time, then drove to our hotel—

Shima Saichoraku, where we had made a reservation.

Even though I’m not the most confident driver,

the roads were simple and easy to navigate.

Well… I could go on and on,

but let’s stop here for now
